The Amazon Logo
Is the Amazon logo shaped like a penis? Was it an accident? I have heard a lot of people asking that question recently. I was wondering if any of my customers noticed the resemblance.
The red squiggly Thing under the Amazon name is definitely shaped like a little up-sloping penis! I can’t even tell you what I thought when I first saw it! I thought, was it just a happy smile when boyfriend Bob pointed it out while drinking his coffee: “Is that an Amazon logo? I wonder if that’s an actual penis.” We laughed and I tried to imagine it in the shape of an actual penis. I had to look twice at its size and shape!
It didn’t take me long to figure out that the Amazon symbol is not an actual penis but it is also not a vagina either. When I did some searching online I found a lot of people with the same questions. Some were more into the question of how it looks. Others asked how it felt when you see it. The more detailed of the questions got me thinking about what the purpose of this logo really is.
So the other day, after reading a few blogs and websites about the Amazon logo, I decided to do a bit of research on it. I was surprised by the amount of information available online and I was also surprised to find that many of these sites are made up of people who had no interest in Amazon or anything related to it!
I then decided that I would try to answer the question that was bothering me before I left it unanswered. If the Amazon logo is a penis, why does it have an arrow coming out of it? What’s the point of that? What does that say to me?
Well, I could answer the question by saying that this is probably the main purpose for which the Amazon symbol is used. It stands for something, which I can’t exactly put into words. My guess is that it stands for the product. And I guess it says “Buy More, Pay Less” in a way.
Of course there is the possibility that it may stand for “Pay Less, Get More,” but that may be a little misleading, as you have to pay for the product first to get the shipping and handling charges and that means you only get what you paid for! In fact, some of the larger Amazon websites say this on the shipping page: “If you don’t have to pay for shipping, get more.” They are actually trying to get you to purchase more products from them. So is the Amazon symbol supposed to mean that you only get what you pay for?
I just don’t know! Maybe it’s supposed to be some sort of slogan? There seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding the logo itself and I’m sure someone will figure out what it stands for, one day!
So now that I have answered the question why does the logo have an arrow, I would like to ask how many times have you seen this arrow? How many times have you seen a picture of an arrow? I’m guessing that only a small percentage of people have ever noticed that the arrow has been added. Perhaps only people in the know have even considered it.
But then again, maybe the point of the logo is to show off the features of the product. It’s like Nike’s Swoosh and the colors, which are very much in the forefront of any product, including the logo! Even if we can’t say exactly how many times the arrow has appeared in the Amazon logo, we can say that it appears often enough that people have noticed it. Now I’d love to see the statistics of other logos to see how many times the Amazon logo has appeared. but I doubt it, as I don’t know where they are.
The truth is that the symbol has appeared in many images in the past – including the first one ever published on the Amazon website! The logo appears in the top corner of the page at the very beginning of the home page. At the very end of the home page and at the very bottom in the footer area. That’s one of the things that most people don’t notice.
So I guess I’ll leave it at that – if the Amazon logo is an arrow, why does it have an arrow? Why is it called that?
